Mel Schuler Sculpture Garden Monica Schill: Encased in Concrete 88 Many of Schill’s pieces she has placed reused /recycled items inside the piece so that the viewer has no visual knowledge of its existence. Encased in Concrete 88 is made up of 88 individual pieces. Each piece is a bag of non-recyclable garbage (insulation, roofing material, wrappers, twist ties, old socks, over used dog toys…) and the sizes vary from 1 foot to 3 feet in diameter. The idea is to give a representation of the space that this many bags of garbage would take up in a land fill and to give an option for dealing with them.;

Knight Gallery Jack Mays A staple of Ferndale, Jack Mays has sat on Main Street for over fifteen years with his white plastic chair and drawing board. Sometimes he’ll sit for two years in one spot, seven days a week, twelve hours a day, drawing every detail. Diagnosed with inoperable cancer in 2006, Jack was given three months to live. Three years later he has outlived his death sentence. A selection of Jack’s drawings, including Main Street Ferndale showcases his devotion to his community as well as his passion for art;

2. THE INK PEOPLE CENTER FOR THE ARTS 411 12th St. Maskibition 25. This competiton began as a way to bridge the gap between visual and performing arts by calling on artists to create both are masks and performance masks. Masks are one of the oldest art forms and have been used world wide since prehistoric times for rituals, in theater, and in masked revelry. Two competitive categories: “Performance Masks” which must be functional and wearable; “Art Masks”, which are visual or conceptual in design but need not be wearable. This year’s show will also feature a non-competive category, Maskfest, for masks created by children.

3. HUMBOLDT ARTS COUNCIL at the Morris Graves Museum of Art 636 F St. Performance Rotunda Gamelan Gamelan Sekar Sequoia is a community gamelan orchestra based in Arcata. GSS plays mostly traditional classical Indonesia music in the central Javanese court style on bronze instruments imported from Surakarta region. GSS performances include puppeteers Sean Powers, and Qehn Jennings, and v.j. Ishan Vernallis; William Thonson Gallery Junque ArteCompetition & Exhibition Designed to celebrate artistic creativity on the North Coast and heighten the awareness to renewable resources in the artmaking processs, each artwork in this juried exhibition is made from 100% recycled materials; Homer Balabanis Gallery Morris Graves & Selections from the Humboldt Arts Council Permanent Collection Come explore the work of Morris Graves as well as a selection of works from HAC Permanent Collection.;

Knight Gallery Jack Mays A staple of Ferndale, Jack Mays has sat on Main Street for over fifteen years with his white plastic chair and drawing board. Sometimes he’ll sit for two years in one spot, seven days a week, twelve hours a day, drawing every detail. Diagnosed with inoperable cancer in 2006, Jack was given three months to live. Three years later he has outlived his death sentence. A selection of Jack’s drawings, including Main Street Ferndale showcases his devotion to his community as well as his passion for art; Anderson Gallery Complimentary Compilation an invitational exhibition of some of Humboldt County’s most unique artists, this mixed media compilation highlights the current work by this group of artists;

Mel Schuler Sculpture Garden Monica Schill: Encased in Concrete 88 Many of Schill’s pieces she has placed reused /recycled items inside the piece so that the viewer has no visual knowledge of its existence. Encased in Concrete 88 is made up of 88 individual pieces. Each piece is a bag of non-recyclable garbage (insulation, roofing material, wrappers, twist ties, old socks, over used dog toys…) and the sizes vary from 1 foot to 3 feet in diameter. The idea is to give a representation of the space that this many bags of garbage would take up in a land fill and to give an option for dealing with them.; Youth Gallery Children’s Author & Illustrator Festival Select works from winning illustrators will be on exhibit to demonstrate the processes of illustration in children’s literature; Second Saturday Family Arts Day Gallery Portraits in the style of Caravaggio View the children’s View children’s art created at September Family Arts Day in the style of Caravaggio.

3b. EUREKA OLD GLASS HOUSE & ANTIQUES/EUREKA SOAP FACTORY 604 F St. Artist Howard Rutherford, born in Texas in 1937. Drawings, paintings, sculpting, and carving, Howard studied at Architecture Design at Texas Tech University, and has proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. This show will be oils and watercolors; Eureka Soap Factory is recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness this month by offering their reasonably priced hand-crafted soaps.

4a. DALIANES TRAVEL 522 F St. Photography by Gary Todoroff. Gary spent two months this past fall of 2008 in Swaziland, Africa. The once-abandoned mining town of Bulembu, is renovating the empty buildings and developing a community that cares for orphaned and abandoned children. These children are the face of Bulembu, and these photographs represent some of the more than 150 children living there now. All 12x18 matted Fuji Crystal Archive photographs are available for a donation of $60 each. All proceeds will be forwarded to Bulembu Ministries Swaziland, where it will be used for orphaned and abandoned children support.

Anderson Gallery New Work by Nicole Jean Hill Through her anthropological approach to art making, Hill photographs familiar spaces an activities within American cultural landscape. She has exhibited her photographs extensively throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia.;

Mel Schuler Sculpture Garden Monica Schill: Encased in Concrete 88 Many of Schill’s pieces she has placed reused /recycled items inside the piece so that the viewer has no visual knowledge of its existence. Encased in Concrete 88 is made up of 88 individual pieces. Each piece is a bag of non-recyclable garbage (insulation, roofing material, wrappers, twist ties, old socks, over used dog toys…) and the sizes vary from 1 foot to 3 feet in diameter. The idea is to give a representation of the space that this many bags of garbage would take up in a land fill and to give an option for dealing with them.;

Youth Gallery Childrens autor & Illustrator Festival Select works from winning illustrators will be on exhibit to demonstrate the processes of illustration in children’s literature.; Second Saturday Family Arts Day Gallery Portraits in the style of Jacques-Louis David View children’s art created at August Family Arts Day in the style of Jacques-Louis David.
